Here are a few ideas that may prove to be of value to all concerned, feature a work of art by a recognized illustrator or famous artist of the past, and critique its composition, down to the bare bones, all comments being welcomed. Another might be to submit a favorite piece of art, and express, why it has a certain appeal to you. Another could be, what key steps in an illustration are used, to put across the intent of the story that's trying to be told. Making the eye go where it should, directing the character actors on the paper stage. These are just a few suggestions to give more depth and range to this already unique site. Congratulations.

You are doing a great job....I love your posts.....
Keep up the good work.Looking forward for more.
ALL THE BEST.
Kavi
Thanks
thank you.
as it evolves would be cool to see some user interaction. maybe a proper msg brd, sketching competitions similar to 1hdc etc etc
keep it up
PS. I'd like to see some sections on brushes in PS and Painter. Knowing your brushes can change a decent sketch to a really clean, finished sketch.
I wish you continued success...
A fantastic idea! -- this could really become a great resource for students (and me!).
I wish you the best of luck, Spencer! Keep surprising me!

Thanks
would like to watch the video tutorials but they wont work :(

Just kidding! Just thought i'd mix it up with a negative comment in there. Seriously fun site! Spencer, you ARE full of surprises! Keep up the good work.

Learned alot from the vids.
One complaint though on them, the sound, it isnt leveled which makes it pretty "hard" to listen to.
Spencer, reminds me of SKAGGS sketching excercises. Back to the roots.
This is the site that ID people need.
Awesome work!!
Could you do a video tutorial on putting together a portfolio for a job interview? I am a recent graduate in Product design looking for work.
incredible!!!!!!
The player wont play anything else here but the "default" bumber.
Thanks and keep up the great work!
I am sure I am not alone when I say that I have been waiting for a site like this to show the many of us that need help or inspiration for sketching.
It looks great!
best wishes...!
On my mac the letters on the page are way to big, and the 'Vimeo'
video's dont run smoothly, maybe you could put the videos up on the
server for download : ) ?
Kind Regards,
Kumar

Whhhat up with that?
yeah, I have not been able to load that one either...we'll get it workin!
On another note, congratulations on getting the site up and running, it looks great and the content is very helpful and well done. I can't wait to see what you guys have planned for the future!
first, you guys are basically creating a one stop shop for ID and it's free. That's what makes this site so awesome. It's especially great for students that are developing their portfolios and deciding what focus they want to pursue. I thought it might be cool if you or people that you know within different industries, post videos or examples of work from those specific industries. That would be a good resource for the students working to gear their portfolios in a specific direction and also to have an idea of what to prepare for in an interview with that type of company. This stems from my own personal experience while interviewing for a position designing soft-goods. I had limited knowledge and experience in creating technical packets (tech packs). They aren't very difficult, I just had limited knowledge of the softgood industry and could have used some help while trying to get in. I'm sure that there are similar little things like that in all focuses; medical, automotive, toys, softgoods, etc. Anyway, just a thought..take it or leave it, it's still a great site.
Woooooooooooooooow what a great sketchs, what a hi level.
Thanks for visiting the site! Be sure to spread the word!
Gracias por visitar! De donde eres? Estamos tratando de mejorar el nivel de calidad todo los dias. Por eso establecimos esta pagina de red. Bueno, espero q nos visites mas a menudo y compartas la informacion con tus amigos! saludos!
Thanks
did it get hacked???
did it move? what is going on!!!!!!!
anyone know?
Secondly I'd love to see some videos on sketching materials such as chrome!
thanks
1 suggestion.
I would like to see your POV's of "communicative sketching" ie, explaining how to explain. This site is chalk full of skills and technique, but what almost all students students lack is how to communicate the idea or explaining what this flashy sketch really is and does. I think both of you do an excellent job in your portfolios with arrows, call outs, storyboarding, but conveying the idea is a whole 'nother venture that few have mastered.
This is not a shameless plug nor my work, just an example. http://gordondowney.com/id/Project%20Pages/Stap...
1 Question.
What dpi/page size do you work in with Sketchbook pro? I've ran into a few snags flipping it to photoshop and my lineweights seem to lose pop because I was working to big or to small.
http://gordondowney.com/id/Project%20Pages/Stap...
I'm on a 31 days of sketching (not counting work...) challenge right now, so this is super timely!
1. Adobe Photoshop
2. Adobe Illustrator
3. Corel Painter
4. Autodesk Sketchbook Pro.
Any way to rotate the entire canvas (all layers) in Sketchbook Pro? I know that's a popular technique with Painter and, you know, analog sketch pads.
Can't wait to see the new vids you have in the works.
great site, really a great idea! i just have one suggestion. i was wondering if you could maybe have an article or a thread discussing the theoretical principles behind some of the aesthetic decisions industrial designers commonly make when rendering designs.
In other words, does an industrial designer's drawing stem from a practical exploration of the objects function, or is it purely an aesthetic exercise focusing on the form of the object rather than its mechanics? how important is it that a drawing captures the physical expression of an object (such as a sports car), or is it more important to communicate the objects form with clarity, or both?
any thoughts?
How to draw them all.
-Lis Wing
could you help me?...
Peace!
great job guys
As far as using an intuos...it works about the same for both programs. In other words....lots of control z's...
[sinister voice] FROM THE DEAD
As for rotating the canvas - Sketchbook Pro does it differently than Painter - when you rotate the image in Sketchbook Pro it re-rasterizes the image so if you do it too much you lose quality. It's a shame because Painter does it so well. Hopefully one company will incorporate the advantage of the other in a future version so we can have the perfect sketching program.
Also, I have never used a Cintiq, but I have used an Intuos3 tablet with both programs and it works splendidly. It's not the 'virtual paper' effect of the Cintiq, but the learning curve isn't that long (IMO). Unless you've got some mad bank I would say start with an Intuos.

you guys blow up my mind!!!!
Just some thoughts, what do people think of Copic markers? And is any of the examples here large scale such as on A1 flip charts. I find drawing on such large paper can be really effective if working with groups of non designers. Just wandering what people think.
I am a third year ID student at Carleton University. I took a year off to focus on my minor and didn't draw for a LONG time and I came across this site and you guys are amazing! Thank you so much for the videos. It's different to practice on your own and follow a video as opposed to being in studio having everyone just watch you know? It's a different vibe. Not to be rushed. Anyways, I really found them helpful!
Thank you! :)
Thank You
Great job on the site! We'll be featuring it as our design Site of the Week on our site. Keep up the great work!
