Nice job on site guys! This will be an excellent resource for any aspiring designer out there. In a field where there is a lot of talent, there are a few of those people who are willing to take a chance and the time to create a website like this without the intention of making a quick buck. I really respect all the effort and wish for the best!

Excellent site, a good beginning. Here's hoping it's a success.
Here are a few ideas that may prove to be of value to all concerned, feature a work of art by a recognized illustrator or famous artist of the past, and critique its composition, down to the bare bones, all comments being welcomed. Another might be to submit a favorite piece of art, and express, why it has a certain appeal to you. Another could be, what key steps in an illustration are used, to put across the intent of the story that's trying to be told. Making the eye go where it should, directing the character actors on the paper stage. These are just a few suggestions to give more depth and range to this already unique site. Congratulations.

Wow, love this site! I'm glad something like this finally came along! And way to prop Pilot HiTec Cs's, I love those things! And the videos are amazing! They help immensely!

PS. I'd like to see some sections on brushes in PS and Painter. Knowing your brushes can change a decent sketch to a really clean, finished sketch.

First of all thank you so much for your sharing ! I'm an industrial design student from Turkey. I like sketching and learning very much and as my friend said "The site just makes me want to draw"... I'll be looking forward your next posts because I've been took a lot of ideas from you.
    I wish you continued success...
  • PhilipStankard · 1 year ago
Love the Site, gearing up for a sketch / concept round for a new project at work. Looking forward to using some of the techniques featured in the sketchbook section. Noticed the Shopping Trolley sketches were more of an "explanatory sketch" I've always seemed to fall in that category and never really evolved into the slick stylish sketches...but trying to evolve and cover all the bases. Thanks for showing a variety of work, nice to see I wasn't the only one sketching like that lol.

This is EXACTLY what I have been looking for! I'm a mechanical engineer tasked with coming up with new products and sketching concepts, yet have no official training in industrial design. Thank you so much for sharing your techniques. It is so helpful to see how people are actually sketching to compare with how I do it. Are you guys planning on some sort of RSS or notification for when new videos come online?
  • snugja · 1 year ago
It's in the works :-) v.2 will be alot better, for now, just pay attention to the blog for updates on the videos as well as become a fan of IDSKETCHING.COM on facebook! We'll be simultaneously posting updates there.

Yo, hey did you guys do this site yourself or did you have someone else do it for you? I like the look...I need to create a personal portfolio site, but know shiz about web design---any tips?
  • snugja · 1 year ago
I did all the programming for the site. I've had some experience with web programming so it wasn't too much of a stretch. I'd suggest taking a class on basic html, css, and javascript before attempting to do it yourself.

nice site. I like the vids, it's nice to see how people actual work up their designs. I design with pencils to sketch, now I trying to use a tablet , sketch in there and layer the fine drawings. Its taking some time to set everything up and get used to the media, but it's a nice way to do things.

  • Oddname · 1 year ago
    Really nice shit here :)
    Learned alot from the vids.

One complaint though on them, the sound, it isnt leveled which makes it pretty "hard" to listen to.
  • jm745 · 1 year ago
We will try and do better with the audio. Some of it has to do with our equipment (or lack thereof) and some of it has to do with the fact that we do the vids late at night. WIll try and get it loud and proud.

Good to see you guys putting your great skills to use. I've been looking at your sketch books and trying to pick up on the marker/color techniques. could you do some demos on some simple marker renderings on paper and then on a computer. Thanks

  • masorella · 1 year ago
Cool site about sketching presented in very straight forward way. Thank you.
  • headplow · 1 year ago
Excellent site. Great concept with great vids and relevant information. The Illustrator tutorial is a neat trick and I had not seen it done that way. While you guys are both very talented it might be novel to accept other video submissions as long as they maintained the same high standards as those currently posted. More designers equals more techniques.(Check out conceptart.org) Another idea perhaps is a 'hand rendered' vs. 'digitally rendered' section for faster access. At any rate, kudos to you both for sharing your skills and putting forth all the effort a site of this magnitude requires. Can't wait to see where all this is headed.Keep up the great work.
  • snugja · 1 year ago
It's in the works. we plan to add more contributors to the site by invitiation.
  • Jaime · 1 year ago
Amazing site! and sure it will only get better and better. One thing that would be cool if you could provide would be some brush presets, specially for painter. So far I've seen only sites that provide custom brushes that are more aimed at painting space scenes and stuff like that. A couple brushes that would kind of emulate markers or pastels would be great!! (the SketchBookPro-ish kind of look of your digital sketches, not the painter default ones, if you know what i mean :)
  • snugja · 1 year ago
we're working on a downloads section for brushes etc with a video explaining what we each do. sit tight! :-)

You may have already heard this, but if not, scrolling doesn't seem to work on the Essentials page or the Videos page in Opera.

On another note, congratulations on getting the site up and running, it looks great and the content is very helpful and well done. I can't wait to see what you guys have planned for the future!
  • snugja · 1 year ago
been playing with it in opera. looks like there is a bug that is corrected by resizing the window when the playlist loads i.e. clicking and dragging from the corner of the window just a little bit. Trying to see if updating to the latest version will help.

awesome site, few teething probs but the content so far is priceless. have been waiting for a site like this for soooo long.great talent guys and thanks for sharing.
  • marked · 1 year ago
Hey guys, great site, you guys never cease to amaze me! Since this site still seems to be in the molding stage, I thought I might add an idea for consideration...
first, you guys are basically creating a one stop shop for ID and it's free. That's what makes this site so awesome. It's especially great for students that are developing their portfolios and deciding what focus they want to pursue. I thought it might be cool if you or people that you know within different industries, post videos or examples of work from those specific industries. That would be a good resource for the students working to gear their portfolios in a specific direction and also to have an idea of what to prepare for in an interview with that type of company. This stems from my own personal experience while interviewing for a position designing soft-goods. I had limited knowledge and experience in creating technical packets (tech packs). They aren't very difficult, I just had limited knowledge of the softgood industry and could have used some help while trying to get in. I'm sure that there are similar little things like that in all focuses; medical, automotive, toys, softgoods, etc. Anyway, just a thought..take it or leave it, it's still a great site.
  • snugja · 1 year ago
we do have plans to bring on other presenters...not specifically from any one industry. thanks for the comments!
  • marked · 1 year ago
p.s. snugja and john both have time machines...they always have even through school. That's how they never seem to sleep.

    Thanks

Thanks for posting up this website. You offer some fun ways to do some sketching, and I think that you've brought out a topic that's not really covered extensively on core77 or other id sites. I hope to pick up some tips from you guys and good luck with the development of this site.

Secondly I'd love to see some videos on sketching materials such as chrome!

  • 123456798 · 1 year ago
    Impressive guys. Very well done.

    1 suggestion.
I would like to see your POV's of "communicative sketching" ie, explaining how to explain. This site is chalk full of skills and technique, but what almost all students students lack is how to communicate the idea or explaining what this flashy sketch really is and does. I think both of you do an excellent job in your portfolios with arrows, call outs, storyboarding, but conveying the idea is a whole 'nother venture that few have mastered.

This is not a shameless plug nor my work, just an example. http://gordondowney.com/id/Project%20Pages/Stap...

    1 Question.
What dpi/page size do you work in with Sketchbook pro? I've ran into a few snags flipping it to photoshop and my lineweights seem to lose pop because I was working to big or to small.
  • snugja · 1 year ago
    I use 200 DPI

One of my secret sketching weapons: a red ball point pen. All the advantages of drawing in pen, plus it knocks out real easy in Photoshop once you scan it. And something about the red makes me less timid about putting a line down. Weird psychological trick I guess!

    working on it.... thanks.
  • Oddname · 1 year ago
A quick Q, which software are you using besides sketchbook pro?
  • Oddname · 1 year ago
And, when are those 5 new vids coming? ;) I assume the 5 privs are for the site
  • snugja · 1 year ago
  • Oddname · 1 year ago
Im talking about the 5 recentely added private ones :) Or maybe they are unrelated to the site?
  • jm745 · 1 year ago
software we use...this is the exhaustive list..
    1. Adobe Photoshop
    2. Adobe Illustrator
    3. Corel Painter
    4. Autodesk Sketchbook Pro.
  • Big Joe · 1 year ago
Love the site guys! Great work.

Any way to rotate the entire canvas (all layers) in Sketchbook Pro? I know that's a popular technique with Painter and, you know, analog sketch pads.

Can't wait to see the new vids you have in the works.
  • yrod · 1 year ago
    hey guys,

great site, really a great idea! i just have one suggestion. i was wondering if you could maybe have an article or a thread discussing the theoretical principles behind some of the aesthetic decisions industrial designers commonly make when rendering designs.

In other words, does an industrial designer's drawing stem from a practical exploration of the objects function, or is it purely an aesthetic exercise focusing on the form of the object rather than its mechanics? how important is it that a drawing captures the physical expression of an object (such as a sports car), or is it more important to communicate the objects form with clarity, or both?

    any thoughts?
  • jimmyjames · 1 year ago

alright...about Autodesk Sketchbook Pro...I want to know more about this software from those who have used it a little, a lot and tons. If you were to recommend only one digital sketching program, would this be it? And how does it compare to Painter? The question was asked below, but I didn't see an answer...can you rotate the canvas like unto Painter? Aaaand...how is using Sketchbook Pro on a Wacom Intuos tablet instead of a Cintiq? Hopefully there are some knowledgeable souls out there. Thanks in advance!

No you can't rotate the canvas in SBP with a command like you can in Painter. I however use SBP mostly on a Wacom Cintiq12wx, so rotating (no matter what program) is just done by wrestling with the device a bit. The recommendation of "the program of choice" would have to go to SBP for me. I love Painter as well and use it a ton, but for simplicity and bang for buck right out of the box I would go with Autodesk.

As far as using an intuos...it works about the same for both programs. In other words....lots of control z's...

hey man, great tutorials, hopin u guys might throw a quick car rendering tutorial up, that demonstrates how to render fluidly and with emotion as opposed to a precise final render. Peace Up.

I like what you guys have done, I was suprised it took this long for somebody to man up and do it. Some of the videos are great, try and keep posting more, I know it might not be the most fun thing for you guys to do, but it helps a ton of people, so thanks. Cheers

TO BOCK - I'm not an expert, but I think I know the answer to your question. Sketchbook Pro's main advantage over Painter is the speed that it transfers your strokes from the tablet to the screen. Painter has some lag, but Sketchbook Pro is virtually instantaneous - it's amazing, basically like real sketching.

As for rotating the canvas - Sketchbook Pro does it differently than Painter - when you rotate the image in Sketchbook Pro it re-rasterizes the image so if you do it too much you lose quality. It's a shame because Painter does it so well. Hopefully one company will incorporate the advantage of the other in a future version so we can have the perfect sketching program.

Also, I have never used a Cintiq, but I have used an Intuos3 tablet with both programs and it works splendidly. It's not the 'virtual paper' effect of the Cintiq, but the learning curve isn't that long (IMO). Unless you've got some mad bank I would say start with an Intuos.

Spencer when did you go to BYU? I went to Brigham Young in 2000. I love this site. I think you guys have a really wonderful thing going on here. I'm currently at Metro State in Denver, and I've been talking about this site to some of the teachers. Only thing is this is going to make the field that more competitive. Do you remember a teacher named Dave a BYU that used to work at NIKE. What was his last name? Anyway, write me back. Hope to hear from you soon.

I visited productdesignforums frequently, just to look at your stuff and be amazed. Now I see how you guys do it and I can learn along. In my opinion, every designschool has it's own way of teaching to draw and it is good to see more techniques than one. So in a way, you are my second designschool.

Congratulations on creating an excellent site, very nice layout and easy to navigate. Its really refreshing to find a site dedicated to ID sketching. Im looking forward to see how it develops.

Just some thoughts, what do people think of Copic markers? And is any of the examples here large scale such as on A1 flip charts. I find drawing on such large paper can be really effective if working with groups of non designers. Just wandering what people think.

    Hey!

I am a third year ID student at Carleton University. I took a year off to focus on my minor and didn't draw for a LONG time and I came across this site and you guys are amazing! Thank you so much for the videos. It's different to practice on your own and follow a video as opposed to being in studio having everyone just watch you know? It's a different vibe. Not to be rushed. Anyways, I really found them helpful!

    Thank you! :)

I was curious what kind of program you were using in your car tutorial. And were you using a tablet by any chance? I've only started drawing my cars by hand and am curious as to other methods people are using.

    Thank You
